Yesterday was my first time meeting with my mentor, Sylvia. We met at her house and she taught me the basics to sewing. This day was like an introduction to sewing because she taught me the parts of the sewing machine and what they do.
The first thing we did was look at some patterns of different types of clothing. She had many different blouse and dress patterns that I would be able to use later. These are like outlines to the clothing I will be making. She told me that I could find other patterns in Joann's Fabrics if I wanted to. After we took a look at some of her clothing patterns, we went over the sewing machine basics. I brought my own sewing machine and she helped me set it up. She taught me how to clean and maintain my sewing machine by oiling it and dusting it out. Then she taught me how to fill the bobbin and how to put the bobbin in place. After, she demonstrated the types of stitches to use and suggested when to use these types. Then she taught me the how to use the attachments that came with the sewing machine. One was for putting in buttons and another was for putting on zippers. After she taught me all this she gave me time to practice different stitches and controlling the machine. I practiced setting the machine by myself and sewing on practice fabric.
On Feb. 23 I spent 3 hours on my Capstone Project with my mentor.
Total hours: 3
